Social Innovation Project Exhibition: A Step Towards a Sustainable Future

On Wednesday, 20th November, IIMS College hosted the Social Innovation Project Exhibition, rooted in the themes of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs covered were – SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. This event served as a platform for students to showcase their innovative solutions addressing some of the most pressing global challenges.

In this exhibition, the participants included 4th Semester students from the September 2023 intake, also known as the exhibitors. There were a total of 16 groups comprising 12 from BCS Faculty and 4 from BIHM faculty. Their collective efforts were highly evident through an outstanding display of ideas that emphasized innovation and sustainability.

A Showcase of Excellence and Ingenuity

The exhibition also drew the attention of international university delegates and other esteemed visitors who interacted with the students. Here, the projects demonstrated the students’ dedication to solving real-world problems while aligning with the global mission of achieving sustainable development. Delegates thus commended the students for their creativity and the potential impact of their ideas, making the event a celebration of collaboration and forward-thinking innovation.

Adding to the event’s significance, a stall from the IIMS Wellbeing Unit, a collaborative initiative with Fheal, was set up. This initiative reflected the college’s approach to promoting mental well-being for students and faculty.

SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

Firstly, projects in this category focused on innovative solutions to promote sustainable practices and reduce waste. Notable exhibits included:

  • EcoBites: Advocating eco-friendly food production and consumption.
  • HamroHerbal: Highlighting sustainable use of herbal resources.
  • Sent Bon: An innovative approach to eco-friendly fragrances.
  • Smart Dustbin: A tech-driven solution for efficient waste management.
  • Threads of Empowerment: Empowering communities through sustainable fashion.

SDG 4: Quality Education

Secondly, this theme centered on enhancing accessibility and quality in education through technological and creative solutions. The projects included:

  • Fresh Start – Your CV, Your Expertise: Empowering individuals to enhance their professional skills.
  • Shikshya – Education at Your Fingertips: Bridging the gap in educational access with digital tools.
  • Fun-Book: Making learning engaging and interactive.

SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities

Thirdly, under this theme, projects targeted the development of safer and smarter urban spaces. Highlights included:

  • Pedestrian Safety System: Enhancing safety for pedestrians through smart systems.
  • Gas and Smoke Detector: Aimed at preventing accidents in urban households.
  • Alert Waves – Your Safety On Us: A project dedicated to personal safety in urban environments.

A Step Forward in Social Innovation

Overall, the Social Innovation Project Exhibition at IIMS College strengthened the power of young minds in driving meaningful change. It provided students with an invaluable opportunity to apply their knowledge to real-world challenges while being socially responsible. Therefore, events like this not only nurture innovation but also inspire students to become catalysts for sustainable development.

Finally, with another success of this year’s exhibition, we can expect the upcoming years to be even more promising, filled with innovative projects and sustainable ideas.

IIMS College Hosts TEDxIIMS On The Theme “Inspiring Ideas, Igniting Change”

On November 30th, 2024, IIMS College hosted TEDxIIMS, a thought-provoking event centered around the theme “Inspiring Ideas, Igniting Change.” Held at the prestigious Aranya Boutique Hotel, this university-focused gathering brought together experienced, influential, and inspiring personalities who delivered quality talks that moved audiences. It featured a lineup of diverse speakers, including, faculty, and industry experts. They shared their inspiring ideas and insights on various topics, including technology, culture, education, and social impact.

TEDxIIMS is an officially licensed TED event, which aims to bring the spirit of TED’s mission of “Ideas Worth Spreading” to local communities around the globe. TEDxIIMS is the gateway to new ideas, inspiration, change, and transformation. It is more than just a collection of talks—This event is a celebration of the ideas, research, and initiatives that drive change within our college and beyond. Whether you’re passionate about social impact, technological innovation, or global sustainability, this event will ignite your imagination and empower you to take action.

Beginning of a Transformative Experience

As the clock hit 11: 30 am, the registration area lit up with audience members waiting for the most awaited TEDxIIMS. Alongside, the TEDxIIMS merchandise comprising of a Cup, Pen, ID Card, Diary, and Bag, was was on display, enticing attendees to claim their exclusive souvenirs. While everything was set up, the WOW factor was the stage itself which gave off such a premium vibe. The stage was so appealing as it was adorned in red hues, a grand TEDxIIMS stage letter, and a center round stage all ready for the speakers to take on.

The Emcee of the event, Mr. Rukesh Ghimire, with his energetic and engaging style, connected well with the audience. He led the event with great enthusiasm letting the audience get the feel of this transformative experience. Likewise, Shreya Chipalu and Aadarsha Shrestha, members of the organizing team, facilitated an interactive Q&A session. This was a really fun session as winners of the Q&A session also won free movie tickets from Kirtipur Cineplex.

Our Speakers

The major highlight of TEDxIIMS was our outstanding lineup of speakers. Each speaker inspired us to think differently and change for the better. Their passion, experiences, ideas, and insights definitely empowered all the audiences and shed light to ignite change. Let’s get to know briefly about each of our speakers below: 

  • Aashutosh Barahi, a renowned filmmaker with hits such as ‘Makha Twa Ya Gwa’, a cultural preservationist and content creator, talked about “Cultural Heritage and Preservation”. He captivated the audience with his insights into preserving Nepal’s rich cultural heritage.

 

  • Professor Sudan Jha, a distinguished academic and researcher with over 23+ years of industrial experience talked about “Advancements in Artificial Intelligence and Ethical Implications”. He delved into the transformative power of AI and the ethical considerations surrounding its development.

 

  • Sanjay Bahadur Singh Thakuri, a biomedical engineer and a co-developer of Nyano Nani, talked about “The Future of Renewable Energy”. He shed light on the potential of renewable energy to revolutionize healthcare and sustainability.

 

  •  Brihat Singh Boswa, a soft skills professional and an academic specialist talked about “Enhancing Student Well-being and Holistic Education”. He emphasized the importance of nurturing both the mind and spirit for holistic development.

 

  • Tenzin Gurung, a Physical and Mental Fitness Coach, talked about “Mental Health Awareness and Advocacy”. He highlighted the connection between physical and mental health, encouraging the audience to prioritize self-care and build mental resilience.

 

Event Highlights

One of the highlights of the TEDxIIMS was the iconic dance on Makha Twa Ya Gwa by Aashutosh Barahi. He blew everyone away with his dance! Everyone could just feel the excitement as he moved to the beat.

Moreover, our audience members had a lot to say about this amazing experience. Laxman Rai, one of the organizers, shared that TEDxIIMS was a new experience that brought together experienced and intelligent minds together in a shared space. He said, “Their ideas and thoughts highly motivated me. I was inspired by Sanjay Bahadur Singh Thakuri’s saying that small dreams matter, have the courage to pursue and chase them. Also, I found Tenzin Gurung’s speech impactful. His message ‘Start From Today’ really moved me.”

Aadarsha Shrestha, an organizing member also shares his TEDxIIMS experience. He says, “Organizing the TEDxIIMS event was an incredible experience for me and my friends. Despite facing challenges, we successfully managed to pull off this phenomenal event. I had the opportunity to interact with esteemed speakers like Sanjay Badhur Thakuri, Dr. Sudan Jha, and Aashutosh Barahi. Though I couldn’t fully listen to the speakers during the event as I was caught up with the event activities, being part of the organizing team gave me a unique perspective and an unforgettable experience. I am truly grateful for the chance to contribute to such a memorable and inspiring event.”

More Than A Event; An Experience

Indeed, what an experience it was at TEDxIIMS! Filled with inspiring ideas, it was indeed a transformative event igniting change. We could feel our minds enlightened hearing the amazing speakers at the event. More than that, it was a burst of inspiration, ideas, learning, and fun all within a single platform. Such an awe-spiring event wouldn’t have been possible without our amazing speakers, organizers, and enthusiastic audience who made the entire day truly memorable. 

This wasn’t just an event; it was a transformative experience. It was a rollercoaster ride of learning, laughter, and mind-blowing insights. After coming out of the hall, we could feel the ray of inspiration, and transformation lighting us all. This was a fantastic intersection of ideas, innovation, and impact.

Industry Visit to Yak Brewing Company

BIHM Students Immerse in the World of Brewing: An Industry Visit to Yak Brewing Company

On November 28th, IIMS College organized an industry visit to the renowned Yak Brewing Company’s Barasinghe Factory for the BIHM students. This was a significant step towards bridging the gap between theory and practice. This immersive experience provided valuable insights into the world of brewing and hospitality for the college’s hospitality management students.

The students had the unique opportunity to witness the entire brewing process firsthand, from the selection of raw materials to the final product. Guided by industry experts, they explored the intricacies of:

  • Understanding the importance of quality ingredients in crafting exceptional beer.
  • Learning about the conversion of starches into sugars, a crucial step in the brewing process.
  • Discovering the role of hops in imparting bitterness, aroma, and flavor to beer.
  • Exploring the magic of yeast in transforming sugary wort into alcohol.
  • Understanding the importance of aging and conditioning in developing the final taste and character of beer.
  • Learning about the various packaging techniques and stringent quality control measures.

“From coming together, and having fun traveling by bus to the factory tour and now chilling with my friends, the entire industry visit experience was awesome. All our friends were also enjoying to the fullest, clicking pictures, filming Tiktoks, even with our teachers, overall we had a nice experience.”, says Shreya Pokhrel. “It was truly a good experience. We got to observe how beer beverages are created in real life.”, says Krizal Manandhar. “Until now, we were only learning theoretically how beers are created, and now, getting to witness the art of crafting beer practically, we are truly enjoying it. Our knowledge is also widening. Thank you IIMS College for providing us with this opportunity.”, says, Prasamsha Bhatta

The visit extended beyond the brewing process, offering insights into the broader world of hospitality. Students had the opportunity to:

  • Gaining insights into the production of spirits and their role in the beverage industry.
  • Interacting with experienced brewers and industry experts to expand their knowledge and professional network.
  • Immersing themselves in the rich history and culture of brewing.

By organizing such industry visits, IIMS College aims to equip its students with practical knowledge and skills, making them industry-ready. These experiences not only enhance their academic journey but also provide valuable networking opportunities.
