Social Innovation Project Exhibition: A Step Towards a Sustainable Future

On Wednesday, 20th November, IIMS College hosted the Social Innovation Project Exhibition, rooted in the themes of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs covered were – SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. This event served as a platform for students to showcase their innovative solutions addressing some of the most pressing global challenges.

In this exhibition, the participants included 4th Semester students from the September 2023 intake, also known as the exhibitors. There were a total of 16 groups comprising 12 from BCS Faculty and 4 from BIHM faculty. Their collective efforts were highly evident through an outstanding display of ideas that emphasized innovation and sustainability.

A Showcase of Excellence and Ingenuity

The exhibition also drew the attention of international university delegates and other esteemed visitors who interacted with the students. Here, the projects demonstrated the students’ dedication to solving real-world problems while aligning with the global mission of achieving sustainable development. Delegates thus commended the students for their creativity and the potential impact of their ideas, making the event a celebration of collaboration and forward-thinking innovation.

Adding to the event’s significance, a stall from the IIMS Wellbeing Unit, a collaborative initiative with Fheal, was set up. This initiative reflected the college’s approach to promoting mental well-being for students and faculty.

Firstly, projects in this category focused on innovative solutions to promote sustainable practices and reduce waste. Notable exhibits included:

Secondly, this theme centered on enhancing accessibility and quality in education through technological and creative solutions. The projects included:

Shikshya – Education at Your Fingertips: Bridging the gap in educational access with digital tools.
Fun-Book: Making learning engaging and interactive.

SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities

Thirdly, under this theme, projects targeted the development of safer and smarter urban spaces. Highlights included:

Pedestrian Safety System: Enhancing safety for pedestrians through smart systems.
Gas and Smoke Detector: Aimed at preventing accidents in urban households.
Alert Waves – Your Safety On Us: A project dedicated to personal safety in urban environments.

A Step Forward in Social Innovation

Overall, the Social Innovation Project Exhibition at IIMS College strengthened the power of young minds in driving meaningful change. It provided students with an invaluable opportunity to apply their knowledge to real-world challenges while being socially responsible. On November 30th, 2024, IIMS College hosted TEDxIIMS, a thought-provoking event centered around the theme “Inspiring Ideas, Igniting Change.” Held at the prestigious Aranya Boutique Hotel, this university-focused gathering brought together experienced, influential, and inspiring personalities who delivered quality talks that moved audiences. It featured a lineup of diverse speakers, including, faculty, and industry experts. They shared their inspiring ideas and insights on various topics, including technology, culture, education, and social impact.

TEDxIIMS is the gateway to new ideas, inspiration, change, and transformation. Beginning of a Transformative Experience

As the clock hit 11: 30 am, the registration area lit up with audience members waiting for the most awaited TEDxIIMS. Alongside, the TEDxIIMS merchandise comprising of a Cup, Pen, ID Card, Diary, and Bag, was was on display, enticing attendees to claim their exclusive souvenirs. While everything was set up, the WOW factor was the stage itself which gave off such a premium vibe. The stage was so appealing as it was adorned in red hues, a grand TEDxIIMS stage letter, and a center round stage all ready for the speakers to take on.

The Emcee of the event, Mr. Rukesh Ghimire, with his energetic and engaging style, connected well with the audience. He led the event with great enthusiasm letting the audience get the feel of this transformative experience. Likewise, Shreya Chipalu and Aadarsha Shrestha, members of the organizing team, facilitated an interactive Q&A session. This was a really fun session as winners of the Q&A session also won free movie tickets from Kirtipur Cineplex.

Our Speakers

The major highlight of TEDxIIMS was our outstanding lineup of speakers. Each speaker inspired us to think differently and change for the better. Their passion, experiences, ideas, and insights definitely empowered all the audiences and shed light to ignite change. Let’s get to know briefly about each of our speakers below:

Aashutosh Barahi, a renowned filmmaker with hits such as ‘Makha Twa Ya Gwa’, a cultural preservationist and content creator, talked about “Cultural Heritage and Preservation”. He captivated the audience with his insights into preserving Nepal’s rich cultural heritage.

Professor Sudan Jha, a distinguished academic and researcher with over 23+ years of industrial experience talked about “Advancements in Artificial Intelligence and Ethical Implications”. He delved into the transformative power of AI and the ethical considerations surrounding its development.

Sanjay Bahadur Singh Thakuri, a biomedical engineer and a co-developer of Nyano Nani, talked about “The Future of Renewable Energy”. He shed light on the potential of renewable energy to revolutionize healthcare and sustainability.

Brihat Singh Boswa, a soft skills professional and an academic specialist talked about “Enhancing Student Well-being and Holistic Education”. He emphasized the importance of nurturing both the mind and spirit for holistic development.

Tenzin Gurung, a Physical and Mental Fitness Coach, talked about “Mental Health Awareness and Advocacy”. He highlighted the connection between physical and mental health, encouraging the audience to prioritize self-care and build mental resilience.

Event Highlights

One of the highlights of the TEDxIIMS was the iconic dance on Makha Twa Ya Gwa by Aashutosh Barahi. He blew everyone away with his dance! Everyone could just feel the excitement as he moved to the beat.

Moreover, our audience members had a lot to say about this amazing experience. Laxman Rai, one of the organizers, shared that TEDxIIMS was a new experience that brought together experienced and intelligent minds together in a shared space. He said, “Their ideas and thoughts highly motivated me. I was inspired by Sanjay Bahadur Singh Thakuri’s saying that small dreams matter, have the courage to pursue and chase them. Also, I found Tenzin Gurung’s speech impactful. His message ‘Start From Today’ really moved me.”

Aadarsha Shrestha, an organizing member also shares his TEDxIIMS experience. He says, “Organizing the TEDxIIMS event was an incredible experience for me and my friends. Despite facing challenges, we successfully managed to pull off this phenomenal event. I had the opportunity to interact with esteemed speakers like Sanjay Badhur Thakuri, Dr. Sudan Jha, and Aashutosh Barahi. Though I couldn’t fully listen to the speakers during the event as I was caught up with the event activities, being part of the organizing team gave me a unique perspective and an unforgettable experience. I am truly grateful for the chance to contribute to such a memorable and inspiring event.”

More Than A Event; An Experience

Indeed, what an experience it was at TEDxIIMS! Filled with inspiring ideas, it was indeed a transformative event igniting change. We could feel our minds enlightened hearing the amazing speakers at the event. More than that, it was a burst of inspiration, ideas, learning, and fun all within a single platform. Such an awe-spiring event wouldn’t have been possible without our amazing speakers, organizers, and enthusiastic audience who made the entire day truly memorable.

This wasn’t just an event; it was a transformative experience. It was a rollercoaster ride of learning, laughter, and mind-blowing insights. After coming out of the hall, we could feel the ray of inspiration, and transformation lighting us all. This was a fantastic intersection of ideas, innovation, and impact.

Industry Visit to Yak Brewing Company

BIHM Students Immerse in the World of Brewing: An Industry Visit to Yak Brewing Company

On November 28th, IIMS College organized an industry visit to the renowned Yak Brewing Company’s Barasinghe Factory for the BIHM students. This was a significant step towards bridging the gap between theory and practice. This immersive experience provided valuable insights into the world of brewing and hospitality for the college’s hospitality management students.

The students had the unique opportunity to witness the entire brewing process firsthand, from the selection of raw materials to the final product. Guided by industry experts, they explored the intricacies of:

Understanding the importance of quality ingredients in crafting exceptional beer.
Learning about the conversion of starches into sugars, a crucial step in the brewing process.
Discovering the role of hops in imparting bitterness, aroma, and flavor to beer.
Exploring the magic of yeast in transforming sugary wort into alcohol.
Understanding the importance of aging and conditioning in developing the final taste and character of beer.
Learning about the various packaging techniques and stringent quality control measures.

“From coming together, and having fun traveling by bus to the factory tour and now chilling with my friends, the entire industry visit experience was awesome. All our friends were also enjoying to the fullest, clicking pictures, filming Tiktoks, even with our teachers, overall we had a nice experience.”, says Shreya Pokhrel. “It was truly a good experience. We got to observe how beer beverages are created in real life.”, says Krizal Manandhar. “Until now, we were only learning theoretically how beers are created, and now, getting to witness the art of crafting beer practically, we are truly enjoying it. One thing every fresher would be excited about once they get into IIMS College is the socialization programme. Here, freshers get to travel, bond with new friends, and embark on a thrilling adventure that sets the tone for their college life.On 14th and 15th November 2024, IIMS College hosted the Socialization Programme for BCS and BIHM Intake at Trishuli Riverside Resort. It was a time of endless fun, meaningful connections, plenty of learning, and unforgettable memories.

IIMS Socialization Programme 2024 – Day 1: Activities, Challenges and Entertainment

Arrival and Excitement:

Getting off the bus, waiting for our rooms and tents to be assigned to us, the excitement was evident. As we captured these moments, little did we know that this was the start of an incredible journey.

Team Building and Challenges:

Moving on, we were divided into groups, and were ready to take on the challenges. These activities were designed to foster teamwork, communication, and leadership skills. We engaged in varying activities, from strategic card games, meticulous straw games, and creative blindfold challenges to the exhilarating physical tug-of-war. Moreover, the competitive spirit added an extra layer of fun to the experience. Finally, the moment the winning teams were declared, the air was filled with loud cheers and applause. Winning never felt this fulfilling.

A Night of Dance and Music:

As the sun set, the energy shifted to the dance floor. The beats of the music filled the air, and we danced the night away, creating unforgettable memories. Just look at those pictures—pure bliss captured in every frame!

IIMS Socialization Programme 2024 – Day 2: Adventure Awaits

Thrills of Rafting:

Next, the day began with an adrenaline-pumping white-water rafting adventure. As we prepared for the rafting adventure, a mix of emotions filled the air. Some were nervous, their hearts pounding with anticipation, while others couldn’t contain their excitement, eager to feel the rush of the rapids. But as we set off, the serene beauty of the river, the lush green hills, and the warm sunlight calmed our nerves. Lastly, simple moments, like high-fiving our paddles after a successful rapid or singing together on the river, will forever warm our hearts.

A Memorable Experience

Overall, the Socialization Programme 2024 was more than just a refreshing getaway; it was a transformative experience. It was a time to build lifelong friendships, learn valuable lessons, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

As we bid farewell to the Trishuli Riverside Resort, we carried with us the spirit of adventure, teamwork, and friendship. This experience has undoubtedly set the floor for a successful and fulfilling college journey.

IIMS BIZHUB Orientation Session: A Kick-off to the Entrepreneurial Journey

IIMS Group, in collaboration with SkillLab, organized the IIMS Bizhub Orientation Session on Monday, July 18, 2022, at Hotel Royal Singi, Kamaladi from 10:00 am onwards. The orientation session was held to formally introduce the selected participants to the months-long dedicated incubation program, i.e., IIMS Bizhub, and prepare them for the next stage i.e. 6 Modules of Bootcamp.

IIMS Bizhub is an academic incubation space to assist budding entrepreneurs in their start-up journey and guide them to transform their business ideas into reality. There were a total of 37 selected participants present for the IIMS Bizhub orientation session. This session can be divided into two halves which are elaborated on below.

The first half of the session covered the overview of what the 6 modules of Bootcamp look like. After completing registration and breakfast, the participants entered the hall with the Bizhub file book that contained the contract, objectives, and a notebook. The session was then formally inaugurated by playing the national anthem. The CEO of the IIMS group, Mr. Sabindra Maharjan, welcomed the facilitator, Mr. Shirijung Hang Rai, Innovation and Strategy Manager, from Skill Lab with Khada. Subsequently, the facilitator took over the session with a grand shoutout, IIMS BIZHUB, together with the participants. Likewise, the participants also signed the contract of the incubation program, IIMS Bizhub.

The facilitator thoroughly presented each module and students reflected on each with examples. As the facilitator touched on various topics, a group activity took place highlighting the third module of the Bootcamp, i.e., product development. The participants were divided into random groups and they had to curate a dress from newspapers. While the participants brainstormed and designed their dresses, this turned out to be a fun space as any one participant from each group had to put on the clothing piece that their respective groups prepared. They performed a runway fashion show as well and introduced their products to everyone. Bidding took place, and a short pitching session was also held.

The second half of the session was about the entrepreneurial journey of the distinguished entrepreneurs for the day. There were three entrepreneurs, Ms. Shailaja Kasaju, CEO of Tekka, Ms. Anjana Malla, Co-Founder of Deego Nepal and Mr. Bijendra Shah, Co-Founder of Daaqi. All three entrepreneurs shared their entrepreneurial stories and the journey of how they built their enterprises. It was a motivating session as the participants learned about the various things an entrepreneur can face. Following this session, the CEO awarded a token of love to all the distinguished entrepreneurs.

The speech from the CEO of the IIMS Group regarding his entrepreneurial journey would be one of the highlights of the session. He spoke about the journey and the growth of IIMS from 2010 up until the inception of the incubation program, IIMS Bizhub. Furthermore, he announced that IIMS Bizhub would be established as a club. Eventually, the executive member board selection also took place.

The orientation session was conducted successfully with the active engagement of the participants. The session enlightened the selected participants about the entrepreneurial journey, which will take place throughout the IIMS Bizhub program and beyond. Likewise, with the initiation of IIMS Bizhub as a club and the steps ahead of this session, it will definitely be an opportunity for the participants to tap their potential to a greater extent.

IIMS Socialization Program for 2022 intake: A Fun Approach to Learning

IIMS College takes off to a refreshing start for newly enrolled students of 2022 intake across all the faculties with IIMS Socialization Program which is aimed at providing orientation and recreation to the newly enrolled students of all the faculties. It is a 2 days and 1 night programme that takes place at Trishuli Riverside Resort. The main objective of the programme is to create a bond among batchmates and help them get to know each other. .

The Socialization Programme took place in three batches, with BCS faculty on 14th & 15th December 2022, MCS and MBA faculties on 17th & 18th December 2022, and BBA and BIHM faculties on 29th & 30th December 2022. The programme included skill workshops, adventure activities such as rafting and ziplining, fun music and entertainment. A total of more than 470 students participated in the Socialization Programme, with 130 boys and 70 girls in the BCS batch, 45 boys and 67 girls in the MBA batch, 12 boys and 6 girls in the MCS batch, 32 boys and 61 girls in the BBA batch, and 30 boys and 18 girls in the BIHM batch.

The programme was facilitated by a team of resource persons, with reputed individuals from different industry sectors and talented members of college’s clubs, IIMS Toastmasters Club and IIMS Bizhub Club. The team include Mr. Sachin Pradhan, Mr. Ajay Regmi, Dr. Chintamani Gautam, Ms. Punam Baniya, Ms. Nuri Fatima, Mr. Nobel Shrestha, Ms. Anupa Shrestha, Ms. Varsha Agrawal, Ms. Deepika Ojha, Ms. Niruta Kumal, Mr. Prajwal Gharti Magar, Mr. Kaushal Dawadi, Ms. Livi Pandey, Ms. Shristi Karki and Mr. Sandip Tiwari.

Along with the fun interactions, refreshment and bondings, the IIMS Socialization Program focused on the improvement of students’ all-round abilities. The program seeked at developing a variety of managerial abilities, including motivation and leadership, problem-solving and conflict resolution, time management and goal setting, mindfulness and wellbeing, team building and teamwork, communication and negotiation skills. The program’s focus on fostering these abilities demonstrates the college’s dedication to giving its students modern education that will help them excel in their future careers.

IIMS Socialization Programme for the 2022 intake aimed at providing a fun approach to learning and an orientation for newly enrolled students. Participants were engaged in entertainment, skill workshops, and adventure activities like rafting and zip-lining, which helped build bonds among students across different faculties. The Socialization Programme was a valuable opportunity for students to learn, grow, and socialize with their peers, all in a single event.
