Shot Put Rules for IIMS Khel Utsav 2024

Shot-put Rules and Regulations:

  1. Shot Weight: The men’s shot weighs 7.26 kilograms (16 pounds), and the women’s shot weighs 4 kilograms (8.8 pounds).
  2. Throwing Area: The throwing area is a circle with a 2.135-meter (7-foot) diameter. It is typically made of concrete or another hard, flat surface.
  3. Throwing Sequence: Athletes take turns throwing the shot within a predetermined throwing order.
  4. Starting Position: The athlete starts from behind the toe board, which marks the front edge of the throwing circle. They must not touch the top or front edge of the toe board during the throw.
  5. Legal Throws: To be considered legal, the shot must land within the sector lines, which extend from the center of the throwing circle in a 34.92-degree angle. Any throw that lands outside these lines is considered a foul.
  6. Foul Throws: Fouls occur if the athlete exits the throwing circle from any part other than the back half, if they touch the top or front edge of the toe board during the throw, or if they leave the throwing area before the shot has landed.
  7. Measurement: The distance of the throw is measured from the inside of the circumference of the throwing circle to the nearest mark made by the shot in the landing area.
  8. Number of Attempts: In most competitions, athletes are allowed a certain number of attempts (usually three or six) to achieve their best throw. In some cases, athletes who qualify for further rounds may get additional attempts.
  9. Equipment: Athletes typically wear a glove on their throwing hand to protect against friction and absorb sweat. The shot itself is made of metal, usually brass or iron, with a smooth surface.
  10. Scoring: The athlete who achieves the longest legal throw wins the competition. In some cases, ties are broken based on the next best throw.
  11. Officials: There are typically judges and officials present to ensure that athletes follow the rules and regulations, measure throws accurately, and enforce fair competition.

These rules provide a basic framework for shot put competitions, but specific regulations may vary depending on decision taken by the governing body or event organizer based upon the situation or profile of tournament participants.
