“This is not just learning about project management, but learning by doing.”
This sentiment echoes the experience of every BIHM student who embarks on the Hospitality Project Management course. It’s a unique opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to real-world projects, gain a deeper understanding of the hospitality industry, and develop crucial skills.
What is Hospitality Project Management?
Hospitality Project Management is a work-based learning approach that immerses students in the entrepreneurial side of the hospitality industry. For seven weeks, students form teams and run their businesses, taking on roles in marketing, finance, operations, and human resources.
What Happens in Hospitality Project Management?
Hospitality Project Management is a 7-week intensive program where students form teams and run their hospitality businesses. Each team has undertaken the roles of real entrepreneurs, handling various aspects of the business, including:
- Team Formation and Role Allocation: Students have divided into teams, assigned roles, and established clear lines of communication. There are four teams namely Team Dalicious, Team Newa Bhansa, Team Just Fried, and Team Coffee Recalls 90s. They conduct regular meetings beginning with business planning, business functioning, sales targets, and so on.
- Business Planning: Teams developed comprehensive business plans, outlining their concept and theme, target market, marketing strategies, financial projections, and operational procedures.
- Marketing and Promotion: Students created marketing campaigns to attract customers, utilizing various channels such as social media, flyers, and word-of-mouth.
- Operations Management: Teams manage day-to-day operations, including inventory management, staff scheduling, and customer service. For instance, for Team Newa Bhansa, the first week of business was pretty hectic. While they had estimated the number of customers through pre-bookings, they experienced an unexpected surge of new customers. Due to this, they faced a shortage in inventory. One of the inventory personnel had to rush to buy the necessary materials. Fortunately, they could procure the required materials in time, ensuring that every customer was satisfied.
- Financial Management: Students handle budgeting, pricing, and revenue generation, ensuring the profitability of their business.
- Human Resource Management: Teams recruit, train, and manage their staff, fostering a positive work environment.
