Hospitality Management Vs Hotel Management

There always seems to be a lot of confusion among the freshly high school or in our case +2 graduate students when it comes to choosing between hotel management and a hospital management course. Understanding the basic difference is essential and very important to choose the right course.

Hospitality management and Hotel management both are a fast-growing major sector of the travel and tourism sector domain. Many usually consider both ones the same. But are they? Though both hotel management and hospitality management deal with the service sector there is a clear distinction between these two. Primarily, both these markets/sectors are interrelated and form a larger part of the tourism industry. The hospitality management curriculum covers hotel management but provides a wider career scope compared to hotel management. Hotel management is more specific to the hotel sector whereas hospitality management opens up an opportunity for the service sector.

Some of the key differences between hospitality management and hotel management are as follows:

1.      Hotel management deals with all aspects of managing a hotel or any other lodging establishment and involves managing their day to day-to-day operations, whereas Hospitality management is any sector that deals with people management. It could be B&B, travel, event management, business development, and even hotels.

2.      Hotel management involves working exclusively in the hotel industry and or tourism industry whereas, with hospitality management, employment opportunities are more varied such as operations, marketing, HR, finance and various administrative positions.

3.      Hotel management is largely an operations-oriented subject whereas Hospitality Management is about people management.

Generally speaking, hospitality management has a more broad scope compared to hotel management. Basically, hospitality management covers everything from tourism, entertainment, hotel, foodservice and MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions) while hotel management is more specific as it is focused on how to run a hotel. Lots of markets can say they are in the hospitality sector while not all markets can say they are in the hotel market.
